UM447. Registrar's Miscellaneous Correspondence. This artificial series of subject files, arranged alphabetically by file title, includes a letter from the three Professors in 1855 complaining of inadequate accommodation; a group of letters and statements from the Auditor-General relating to University accounts following the discovery of the Dickson frauds, 1902-1904; applications for recognition of degrees and matriculation from other institutions 1879-1894; applications for positions; attendants; affiliated Colleges, the Beaney Scholarship. This series may contain estrays from the main Registrar's Correspondence Series. (Microfilm copies available at 1995.0009).

The Registrar: Major Colin Campbell MA (Oxon.) acted as honorary secretary to the University Council from May 1853 until October that year, when Edward Graves Mayne was appointed the first Registrar. When he resigned in June 1855 the office of Registrar was briefly abolished and the work done by an associate of the Chancellor, Charles Cumberland. Professorial Board chose to appoint another Registrar, John Frederick James, in May 1856. When he died, in 1864, the position was filled temporarily by John Madden until the appointment in the same year of Edward Fitzhayley a'Beckett, who held the office until 1902.
