1986.0036 [Papers of Wilfred Prest]
Date Range of Records: 1929-1985
Creator(s):
- Prest, Professor Wilfred [1907-1985]
Records of this collection cover mostly the later part of Professor Prest's career between 1970 and 1984. It illustrates Prest's change of research interests after his work with the Commonwealth Grant Commission, from industrial economics to problems of fiscal federalism and public finance.

This accession record comprises Wilfred Prest's personal papers, newspaper clippings, subject files; inward and outward correspondence with overseas contacts; reports and correspondence from the Commonwealth Grant Commission and papers Prest wrote on its early history; minutes, correspondence and conference papers on federalism, from the Centre for Research on Federal Financial Relations (Australian National University); research papers and reviews with copious notes by Professor Prest on the topics of federalism and Public Finance; correspondence, reports and photographs of the 1973 Australian Constitutional Convention at which Professor Prest was an Economic Adviser to the Victorian Delegation.

The original order of the collection as it first came in to the Archives was mostly preserved. The order of the boxes has been changed to join together relating records and group them by activity. The current order was thus imposed by the archivist with minimal arrangement.
The first two boxes, items 1 to 24, contain personal records of Wilfred Prest and his wife Marjorie.
Items 25 to 114 on the list are subject files organised and kept by Professor Prest and covering topics of interest such as health and age care, natural resources, government politics, the Premier's conference, tax sharing, mining companies, public finance and federalism.
The items 115 to 121 comprise files and publications relating to the 1973 Australian Constitutional Convention.
Research and conference papers from the Centre of Research on Federal Financial Relations to which Professor Prest abundantly contributed after his retirement from the University of Melbourne, his notes and records about the Commonwealth Grant Commission correspond to item numbers 122 to 159 on the list.
Item 160 encompasses Professor Wilfred Prest personal collection of American publications on Federalism.
