2018.0076 [CIGUATERA]
Date Range of Records: 1984-1990
Creator(s):
- Ruff, Associate Professor Tilman [-]
This series comprises correspondence, reference materials and working papers created and compiled by Associate Professor Tilman Ruff in preparation for and as result of the article Ciguatera in the Pacific: A Link with Military Activities for the Lancet, published 28 January 1989. The article drew a conclusive link between rising incidents of ciguatera food poisoning with the program of French nuclear testing that occurred at Moruroa Atoll between 1966 and 1996. The article established Ruff as an expert on the subject of ciguatera food poisoning.
While content is intermingled throughout the series, the first part of the series primarily contains correspondence with scientists, medical researchers, politicians, journalists and anti-nuclear campaigners. Notable correspondents include Lancet editor Dr Ian Munro, anthropologist and anti-nuclear campaigner Bengt Danielsson, journalist David Robie and French Polynesia Minister for Health and Research Dr Patrick Tahiata Howell. Correspondence with health professionals such as Dr Michael Browne, Dr Richard Lewis and Professor John Pearn shares experience and knowledge regarding detection and treatment of ciguatera poisoning. Intermingled here are clippings and copies of newspapers from the South Pacific.
The second part of the series (2018.0076.00048 - 2018.0076.00092) consists of a mixture of research files on collecting photocopies, clippings and off-prints of articles from science and medical journals on various aspects of ciguatera poisoning, areas affected and related issues. These are occasionally annotated by Ruff. Interspersed here are materials for speaking engagements and requests for reviews of unpublished papers by journals such as The Medical Journal of Australia on the subject of ciguatera poisoning.
The creator’s file/document titles and arrangement of files has been maintained.
