Ritchie, Mr James

Biography: James Ritchie (b. 1812 - d. 1857) Second son of James Ritchie and Lillias Linton, born in Peeblesshire Scotland. He migrated to Australia in April 1841 landing in Williamstown. After touring a large part of the Western District in late 1841, he applied for a licence together with James Scales to manage land in the Parish of Yalimba. The partnership with Scales was dissolved in 1844 and the original run was divided into Blackwood and Woodhouse. By 1854, he also held the licence to Woodhouse. Apart from this main holding, he held the licence to run Fiery Creek, a sub-division of Caranballoc, from April 1851 to May 1854 after which his brother John held the licence. James Ritchie was killed after falling from a horse in February 1857,
