The History of the University Unit formed in 1995 to support the writing of John Poynter and Carolyn Rasmussen’s A Place Apart: The University of Melbourne, Decades of Challenge, (Melbourne University Press, 1996).
After that project was completed, the Unit continued to promote and facilitate research and publication about these histories, organise seminars and publish working papers.
In the lead up to the university’s sesquicentenary, the Unit became the 150th Committee, administering a series of grants supporting new projects, and a series of events held throughout the year.
In 2010 it restructured, employing a part-time academic as a Research Officer and moving into the University’s Engagement portfolio. It continues to facilitate events, and publishes new research.
Throughout its history it has supported three separate oral history projects. The earliest was undertaken to support Poytner and Rasmussen’s history. A second project was undertaken by Rasmussen on student leaders. The most recent group of interviews were undertaken by the Unit to record interviews with significant long-standing members of staff. |
