The department, previously known as Personnel Services, before that as Staff Branch, grew out of the reorganization of the Registrar's office in the 1940s, leading eventually to the creation of the position of Vice-Principal in 1965 following a report from a Committee chaired by Dr P G Law. Staff Branch was one of the Vice-Principal responsibilities. It was renamed Personnel Services in c.1987.
