2014.0093 Records of the Technical Teachers' College [1951-1970] Creator(s): Technical Teachers' College [-] These student cards span most of the Technical Teachers College's existence, covering as they do 1952-1970 (see 2014.0094, UM1176 for the years 1971-1972). Whilst this collection is small in size, comprising only 5 boxes, these records are important as they most likely exist as the only source of results for Technical Teachers' College students. Students enrolled in this programme were seeking to obtain a Trained Trade Instructor's Certificate in order to teach trade subjects such as bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, welding, plumbing, sheetmetal, motor mechanic, fitting and machining, to name but a few of the possible trades. The cards did change over time but continued to record the same types of information. The cards are 2 sided, and generally include the following details: Side 1 - Personal details for the student (names/date of birth/marital status/number of children etc.), first year of enrolment, a photo of the student, address, practice school, previous teaching, method subjects etc.; Side 2 - Qualifications and experience, e.g. results by year of study, teacher training, practical teaching, trade experience, trade courses, additional qualifications etc. In terms of broad history: In 1951, the Education Department established the Technical Teachers' Training Centre in the Melbourne Technical College; In 1954 the Education Department granted the Training Centre the status of a teachers' college; In 1973 the Technical Teachers' College, Hawthorn changed its name to State College of Victoria at Hawthorn and became one of the foundation campuses of the newly formed State College of Victoria; In January 1982 the State College of Victoria at Hawthorn changed its name to Hawthorn Institute of Education; Some time after 1997 the Hawthorn Institute of Education changed its name to Hawthorn English Language Centres. 5 boxes (0.85m) University, official
