2002.0026 Papers of Albert Edward Woodward [1968-2002] Creator(s): Woodward, Sir Albert Edward [1928-15 April 2010] Papers relate to Edward Woodward's work as Senior Counsel for the Yirrkala Aboriginal People in the Gove Land Rights Case (Milirrpum v Nabalco Pty Ltd in 1970-71). At the invitation of the Prime Minister, Mr. E G Whitlam, Justice Woodward conducted a Royal Commission into Aboriginal land rights in the Northern Territory. His first report was presented in July 1973 and recommended the establishment of Aboriginal Land Councils aimed at providing a united Aboriginal voice for advice and advocacy in the Territory. A final report was presented in April 1974. The commission paved the way for the Northern Territory Land Rights Legislation which was enacted in 1976.
