The Zinc Corporation Ltd was registered in Melbourne in 1905 as a company to treat the zinc-bearing tailings at Broken Hill, New South Wales. In 1911, it acquired the leases of Broken Hill South Blocks and reconstituted itself with Head Office in London. In 1915 it expanded further by participating with other Broken Hill mining companies to acquire a controlling interest in BHP’s lead smelters at Port Pirie, South Australia and to form Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty Ltd (BHAS). It subsequently formed New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd in 1936; joined two overseas oil companies to search for natural gas and oil in Australia in 1946 with the partnership forming Frome-Broken Hill Co Pty Ltd in 1947; and formed Southern Power Corporation Ltd in 1948 to provide power to its Broken Hill mines.
In Britain in 1949, Zinc Corporation merged with Imperial Smelting Corporation to form Consolidated Zinc Corporation(CZC) and Consolidated Zinc Pty Ltd (CZP) became the Australian subsidiary. In 1951 management of the Australian interests of CZC was transferred to CZP in Australia. In 1955 CZP formed Interstate Oil Ltd to take over ites one-third interest in Frome-Broken Hill. The name of the company was changed to IOL Petroleum Ltd in 1974.
In 1962, CZC in London merged with Rio Tinto Company Ltd for form the Rio Tinto Zinc Corporation (RTZ(. Their Australian subsidiaries, CZP and Rio Tinto Mining Company of Australia, merged to form Conzinc Riotinto of Australia Ltd (CRA). |
