Woodward, Sir Albert Edward

Biography: Edward Woodward was born in 1928 and educated at Melbourne Grammar and the University of Melbourne. After graduating LL.B., Woodward was admitted to the Bar in 1951 and became QC in 1965. From the 1960s he was a member, often presiding, of numerous public bodies including the Dried Fruits Board (1963-1972), the Victorian Association of Youth Clubs (1966-1976), the Victorian Bar Council (1969-1972), and the Stevedoring Industry Council (1970- 1972). From 1972 to 1979 Woodward was Judge of the Northern Territory Supreme Court, Judge of the Australian Industrial Court and, from 1972 to 1990, Judge of the Supreme Court, ACT. In the midst of this activity, Woodward was a Royal Commissioner into Aboriginal Land Rights (1973-1974), president of the Trade Practices Tribunal (1974-1976), and Director-General of Security (1976- 1981). Woodward was a Judge of the Federal Court from 1977 until 1990, when he became Chancellor of the University of Melbourne. Sir Edward Woodward died on 15 April 2010.
