Thelma Solomon was born in Adelaide to an Italian mother and an English father; her family moved to Melbourne when she was an infant. Educated at MacRobertson Girls' High School, Solomon worked as a radiographer at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute for several years before retraining to become a teacher. Inspired by Zelda D'Aprano's radical action, Solomon joined her on 31 October 1969 in chaining themselves to the doors of the Arbitration Commission to protest the lack of equal pay and other inequities against women. Solomon went on to establish the Women's Action Committee with D'Aprano and Alva Geikie and was involved in the equal pay tram rides, the anti-Miss Teenage Quest protests and challenging male-only access to saloon bars.
