Biography: |
John Henry Michell, mathematician, was born on 26 October 1863 at Maldon, Victoria. Educated at Wesley College and the University of Melbourne, he graduated B.A. in 1884. From 1884 until 1890 he studied the Mathematical Tripos at Cambridge and in 1890 was elected Fellow of Trinity College. From 1892 until 1923 he was Lecturer in Mixed Mathematics and from 1923 until retirement in 1928, Professor of Pure and Mixed Mathematics at the University of Melbourne. By 1900 he had published 23 articles, mainly relating to engineering problems and in 1902 he was made Fellow of the Royal Society for his research in Applied Mathematics, especially hydrodynamics and elasticity. In 1937, with M.H. Belz (later Professor of Statistics), he wrote The Elements of Mathematical Analysis, London, Macmillan & Co., 2 vol. He also wrote a number of original essays and lectures, many for the Mathematical Association of Victoria of which he was co-founder in 1906, and performed various experiments to test his deductions, From his retirement until his death in 1940, Michell was an Honorary Research Professor. His brother, A.G.M. Michell, was a distinguished engineer. |
