Biography: |
Sir Maurice Mawby, 1904 to 1977, born and educated at Broken Hill NSW. From 1922 to 1928 he held a variety of positions with the Junction North mine. In 1928 he joined the Zinc Corporation Limited and served in the Survey Department until 1934 when he transferred to the metallurgical side and rose to become Mill Superintendant. He worked on the development of the all-flotation process of metal separation as well as helping to supervise the initial stages of Albert Morris' flora regeneration scheme. During WWII Mawby acted on several war production committees and became Zinc Corporations' Chief Metallurgist in 1944, acting as Manager of New Broken Hill Consolidated and Director of Research and Development for BHAS. Returning to ZC as Director of Exploration he oversaw various world class mineral finds in the 1950s and 60s. Mawby became Director of Research and later a Board member. Appointed as Vice Chairman of Consolidated Zinc in 1955 becoming Chairman in 1961 and first Chairman of Conzinc Riotinto of Australia aftter its merger with RT in 1962. |
