Biography: |
Alva Geikie was born in 1936 in Brunswick, Melbourne. After completing a three-year needlecraft course at Emily McPherson College she made clothes at Myer for two years. She later taught needlecraft in schools while studying at night for a Bachelor of Arts at Monash University. In 1969 Geikie joined equal pay activist Zelda D'Aprano in chaining themselves across the doors of the Arbitration Court. She became co-founder of the Women's Action Committee in 1970 and subsequently helped organise the Equal Pay Tram Ride, the anti-Miss Teenage Quests and protest action against men-only public bars. She was involved in the publication of 'Vashti's Voice' and the Women's Abortion Action Committee. In 1972 Geikie helped co-write the joint Women's Liberation Movement and Women's Electoral Lobby submission to the Equal Pay case. In 2005 she received an Edna Ryan Award to honour her years of feminist activism. |
