Creator:
Brodney, Alfred Tennyson
Biography: A.T. Brodney was born in Melbourne in 1896, the son of journalist Maurice Brodzky. He spent much of his early life in the United States, returning to Australia in 1918, whereupon he joined the Australian Socialist Party. In 1920 he helped to found the Communist Party of Australia and in 1924, with his wife May (nee Francis), assisted in re-establishing the defunct Melbourne branch. Disillusioned with the Party's increasingly doctrinaire stance, both resigned from the Party in 1925. Brodney was employed as a clerk at the legal firm, Maurice Blackburn & Co. whilst studying law at the University of Melbourne. After graduating LL.B. in 1939, he began a long career in labour litigation, and became a senior partner in Balckburn's firm and later a solicitor to the Australian Council of Trade Unions.
