Amalgamated Society Of Carpenters And Joiners, Richmond Branch
History : The BWIU traces its parentage to the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners, which in the 19th Century was a branch of the English union of the same name. The ASC&J and the Society of Progressive Carpenters and Joiners merged during WW1. The union was deregistered in the 1940s and re-registered as the BWIU in the 1950s. The ASC&J name was taken over by a rival right wing union. When reregistered it became the BWIU. The Richmond Branch was one of the more substantial urban branches. The BWIU amalgamated with the Timber Unions to form the Construction, Forestry, Mining Employees Union in 1992 as its Building Workers Industrial Union Division.
