The 6th International Feminist Book Fair was held in 1994 in Melbourne's Exhibition Building from July 27 to 31. Melbourne won the bid to hold the Fair in 1990 when the International FBF Committee voted unanimously in its favour. Publisher and author Susan Hawthorne was the Chair of the Management Committee; other members were Renate Klein, Lisa Bellear, Destiny Deacon, Melba Marginson, Carolyn Ingvarson, Lorna Hannan, Liz Smith, Jocelyn Scutt and Colleen Lindner. Jane Sloane was appointed the Fair director and with a small team of assistants was responsible for the organisation of the Fair under the direction of the Management Committee. The special theme of the Fair was Indigenous, Asian and Pacific writing and publishing. The Fair itself comprised two parts: a two-day trade fair for publishers, booksellers, writers, librarians and others directly involved in the book trade, followed by a three- day literary festival open to the public and comprising readings, book launches and panel discussions. Hundreds of women from every continent attended and the event was deemed a great success. Previous IFB Fairs were held in London (1984), Oslo (1986), Montreal (1988), Barcelona (1990) and Amsterdam (1992). |
